Crowe Wellness is a Calgary based clinic that provides embodied healing approaches to health and wellbeing

Manual Osteopathy

Manual Osteopathy is an hands-on manual therapy treatment that looks at the way the body functions as a whole, rather than viewing its parts or symptoms separately. It is based upon the philosophy that the body has an innate ability to heal itself when its components are balanced. The goal of osteopathic treatment is to restore proper balance and function, allowing your body to heal through its own natural processes. Osteopathy works to balance your nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems, improving range of motion, and relieving discomfort or other symptoms.  Manual Osteopathy is a clinically-oriented healthcare modality that helps to alleviate the discomfort and tension associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscular overuse and many chronic pain conditions. These treatments are also proven effective for people of all ages from premature babies, pregnant women, the elderly, and all ages between.

There are Four Principles of osteopathic philosophy;

1) Each structure in your body supports the overall function of your body

2) The natural flow of your body’s fluids (i.e., lymphatic, vascular, and neurological) needs to be preserved and maintained

3) The physical, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive systems of your body do not operate in isolation. They are interrelated and work in harmony to provide optimal health

4) Without restrictions on it systems, the body is capable of healing itself

Therapists use their assessment skills to determine the clients therapy and treatment plan, evaluating any contraindications or factors that could affect treatment. Osteopathic therapists blend techniques using various hands-on approaches to promote self-healing. We believe that regular Manual Osteopathic Therapy sessions are an essential element to maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

CranioSacral Therapy

What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy is a very gentle, non-invasive whole body evaluation and treatment that works with the client’s inherent healing mechanisms to facilitate optimal health and release restrictions in the body that affect the central nervous system. In a CranioSacral Therapy session, the therapist uses at most, up to 5 grams of pressure (approximately the weight of a nickel) when in contact with the body to feel for the CranioSacral Rhythm.

The CranioSacral Rhythm is the Rhythm of Cerebrospinal fluid as it is produced and reabsorbed in the body, which has its own rate, similar to a heart rate or a respiratory rate. By evaluating this rhythm, the therapist can use techniques that help to release restrictions and tensions in the nervous system, and in the body’s tissue, nerves, fascia etc. CranioSacral Therapy facilitates balancing the flow of Cerebrospinal fluid through the dural tube and ventricles in the system. The Dural tube is the membranous structure that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, and provides a protective cushion for the brain and spinal column, while bringing nourishment to the nerves, and removing wastes and toxins in nervous system.

The goal of a CranioSacral therapy session is to find restrictions in the dural tube and related membranes, nerves and fascia that restrict the flow of the Cerebrospinal fluid, and release these restrictions, in order to promote optimum fluid exchange within the CranioSacral system.

How Can CranioSacral Therapy Help me?

CranioSacral therapy induces the clients bodies own inherent healing mechanisms to not only promote health and wellness, but to facilitate healing from trauma and illness processes. People experience the effects of stress on their body and nervous system in many ways, for example, birth trauma, injuries, surgeries, or accidents that can create restrictions within the dural membranes and fascia in the body. CranioSacral therapy promotes nourishment and fluid exchange within the dural tube to reduce tension and stress in the nervous system. Once the restrictions or tensions in the CranioSacral system release, most clients experience improved health and well being. CranioSacral Therapy supports the body to integrate and process physical, mental and emotional trauma -to allow a greater sense of embodiment, and access to inner resilience and resourcing.

Lip, Tongue Ties, and Breastfeeding Support

Many babies are born with a combination of conditions called a tongue and/or a lip-tie (ankyloglossia), causing restrictions in tongue movement. Tongue-tie is sometimes diagnosed at birth or at a baby’s routine newborn check, however, it is often missed until challenges with feeding appear.

Common signs of a lip and/or tongue-tie can include the following:

· The tip of the tongue looks notched or heart-shaped

· Unable to stick out their tongue or move it past the edge of their lower lip

· The tip of the tongue can’t reach the roof of the mouth

· Difficulty moving their tongue from side to side

· Trouble latching on or staying on the breast

· Long feeding times, or a need to top up

· Feeding is a struggle, and can feel like a full-time job

· Gain weight at a slower pace than average

· Making a “clicking” sound when feeding

· Excessive gassiness or colic

· Excessive drooling

· Open mouth breathing and snoring

· Upper lip curls in during feeding

· Rejecting  a soother

· Dribbles from the bottle, breast, or both

· Baby often sounds congested or mucosy

· Pain with nursing/latching to the mother

· Mother’s nipples are cracked, or mis-shaped after nursing

· Mother has clogged ducts, engorgement, or mastitis

· Gap between two front teeth

· Difficulty with the introduction of solids

· Delay or poor speech development

Diagnosis of TOTs (tethered oral tissues) can only be made by a medical doctor or a dentist. However, Lactation Consultants, Chiropractors, or Bodyworkers can relay their clinical impression and guide you to the appropriate and best referrals for further diagnosis. To be noted, TOTs care is not included in any care provider's general education, but must be sought out via continuing education. At Crowe Wellness, we have advanced training with a focus on TOTs have additional education and experience to serve your baby best.

Normal tongue function is important as it is needed for a baby to latch and breastfeed efficiently, promote normal speech and facial development, and for proper self-cleansing of the mouth. It also encourages adequate swallowing patterns and allows for proper growth and development.

Your baby likely won’t have all the signs mentioned if they are having problems with feeding due to a tongue tie or lip-tie. However, if your baby is experiencing any of the signs above, or you feel concerned that your baby may have a tongue tie or a lip-tie, please do not hesitate to book a consultation.
